Hyperbaric Oxygen for Concussions and Post-Concussion Syndrome

How Dangerous are Concussions?

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the leading cause of death and disability in the United States today. About 70-90% of TBIs are classified as mild (mTBI), and up to 25% of these will not recover and will suffer chronic neurocognitive impairments. This study was set up to test the effectiveness of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) in improving brain function and quality of life in mTBI patients suffering chronic neurocognitive impairments.

Does HBOT Help to Treat Concussions?

The study included 56 patients who had experienced an mTBI within 1-5 years and had been diagnosed with prolonged post-concussion syndrome (PCS). The patients were treated with a 40 session protocol of 60 minutes breathing 100% oxygen at 1.5 ATA. This study found that HBOT was extremely effective for treating TBIs.

Researchers wrote in their conclusions, “HBOT can induce neuroplasticity leading to repair of chronically impaired brain functions and improved quality of life in mTBI patients with prolonged PCS at late chronic stage.”

This is an extremely important study, as millions of people every year experience brain injuries for which there are currently few treatments outside of “rest and recovery.” The study proves for the first time that the underlying causes of poor cognitive function after a mTBI, i.e. the lasting damage to tissue, can be reversed inside of a hyperbaric chamber.

At ATX Hyperbarics, we can run the same protocol to help any one suffering from the effects of a TBI, and lead to a lasting recovery! Contact us today to find out more!
